ThrivingPets Aluminum Hydroxide Fine Powder 200 Gram Jar By ThrivingPets
ThrivingPets Aluminum Hydroxide is a phosphorus binder that is used to reduce phosphorus levels in cats and dogs with renal failure.
ThrivingPets Aluminum Hydroxide is a phosphorus binder for cats and dogs with renal failure. This product is odorless and tasteless- making it a great choice to mix into food or administer with a treat. ThrivingPets Aluminum Hydroxide powder is the most popular form of this medication and currently has an expiration of September 21, 2023. The technical name of ThrivingPets Aluminum Hydroxide Powder is Dried Aluminum Hydroxide Gel Powder. ThrivingPets Aluminum Hydroxide Powder is not returnable by law.
Aluminum Hydroxide should be administered with food. This is a dose-to-effect medication. Aluminum Hydroxide powder contains a minimum of 1,200 mg of Aluminum Hydroxide per teaspoon. There are approximately 100 teaspoons of powder in the 200 gram container.
For wet food: put the food in the serving bowl, add the ThrivingPets Aluminum Hydroxide Powder to the food, add water equal to 3 times the amount of the powder, mix thoroughly, and let the food sit for at least 15 minutes before serving. The water and letting the food sit are to help the powder hydrate and the particles to break down so your pet can't detect the powder in the food.
For dry food: put the daily amount of food and ThrivingPets Aluminum Hydroxide Powder into a ziplock bag and shake well. Let sit for at least 4 hours to allow the powder to absorb into the oil in the food. For dosing recommendations, please see Dr. Larry Nagode's dosing recommendations here- Aluminum Hydroxide Dosing

A 2001 study by Peter Markewell (BSc, BVetMed, MRCVS) for the Waltham Centre for Pet Nutrition found that "...using a phosphate- and protein-restricted diet, in combination with oral phosphorus-binding agents in those cats in which control of hyperphosphatemia [high phosphorus] and RHPTH [renal secondary hyperparathyroidism] was not achieved by diet alone, resulted in more than doubling of average survival time from the commencement of treatment."

Great product, cats doing well with this phosphate binder
I have an elderly chihuahua mix who's in kidney failure. Her creatinine and BUN were double normal and she was drinking a huge amount of water. She'd become incontinent during the night and had gotten lethargic and lost her appetite. My vet put her on a prescription diet and epakitin. It did work, but I tried the Aluminum hydroxide also and it works much better. She has no accidents in the night at all now and her energy is back plus her appetite is good again. With the epakitin she had the occasional accident and her appetite wasn't as good as it is with the aluminium hydroxide.I realize that it's just postponing the inevitable. But I'm very happy that such a simple treatment has given me longer to enjoy Ginger's company. Here's hoping that the powder will continue to work for quite a while to come!
I had an old cat in CRF that the vet put on Epikitin and the soy/grain prescription diet. He hated the food and felt bad. After quite a bit of research, it seemed that wasting from the non-food for an obligatory carnivore was worse than CRF and the real culprit is phosphate. I switched him to AlOH and a meat diet. He lasted for 3 years before succumbing to a tumor at almost 18.I now have two more cats in CRF. I feed them a raw high fat turkey supplemented with the AlOH, salmon oil, CaCO3, Aunt Jeni's Herbal Supplement, yogurt, kefir, and taurine. After 6 months, one dropped back to normal range and the other's blood numbers had dropped by half what they were. Both regained all the weight they lost and so far, I don't have the constant vomiting.I had the pound jar and it lasted for 2 years. It is a fine powder but I am convinced it is a much better (and less expensive) phosphate binder than the epikitin. It allows me to treat the CRF without starving my carnivores with indigestible soy and grain. Plus they still greatly enjoy eating, which my old boy did not on the proscription diet.
